Self Care Sunday: Bentonite Clay and Apple Cider Vinegar Mask

Every now and then, my skin decides to have a party and bring lots of unwanted friends.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I started using Derma-E products about one month ago. My skin was clear, but I wanted something to handle my acne scarring. I made the not-so-wise decision of  going cold turkey on my old skincare routine and now I’m dealing with a pretty unsightly breakout. My lifestyle hasn’t changed much, so it’s gotta be this new regimen. I won’t give up entirely on Derma E –  maybe one or two of the products could work for me, but I’m going back to basics to get my skin clear.

To fight breakouts, I like to do a clay mask once or twice a week. I’ve been doing this for five years and it has worked wonders to dry up pimples and excess oil.

What you’ll need:

  • bowl and spoon. I’ve read that using metal bowls and spoons lessen the clay’s effectiveness, but this is not necessarily true.
  • foundation brush
  • bentonite clay
  • apple cider vinegar
  • optional: essential oils
  1. Mix your desired amount of clay and ACV in the bowl. I find that 1 teaspoon of clay and 1.5 tsp of ACV give me the consistency and amount that I like best.
  2. Add one or two drops of your favorite skin-friendly essential oil(s). I use frankincense and tea tree oil to help with controlling acne.

3. Mix and apply evenly to your face and neck using a foundation brush. Avoid eye area.

4. Let sit for 20-25 minutes. This is a good time to multi-task and clean up your house. Or    watch beauty videos on Youtube. 😉

Things to know:

  • As the mask dries, you’ll feel your skin tighten and start to pulsate. This is normal.
  •  The ACV or the tightness of the mask may irritate sensitive skin. If you’re concerned about redness or having a reaction, do a patch test on your hand.  Plan to stay inside for a little while to see how your skin reacts.
  • Not a drop of oil will be left on your skin.  Make sure you follow up with moisturizer!

That’s it! Tell me about your skin care routine and how you practice self-care throughout the week.

Shirley ❤

Hi!!! I love using natural products! But I never used bentonite clay so thanks for the instructions on how to use it. Going to get it. I am now following you!
FYI: I am doing a collaboration with DERMA.E and I can’t wait to share the review with you!
