Planning Made Functional: Tips and Tricks

You have a planner. Great! So what do you make of all these boxes, lines, and accessories? If you’re into keeping your planner a little cute and whole lot of functional, here is my tried-and-true system to staying organized each month.

I keep my work and personal tasks separate because it keeps my stress level down. I’ll do another post on how I structure my work planner, but this is just how I keep up with everyday life.

Decoration: I decorate first. Just a preference. I don’t use a whole lot of stickers or washi, so there’s plenty of space to write.

Monthly Layout: Only one-time events  go here. These are important things that must get done or acknowledged that day.

  • Appointments
  • Bills*
  • Birthdays
  • Car service & repairs
  • Travel plans

Planner inserts are printables from Growing Up Goddess’ Etsy shop.

I check my monthly spread at the beginning of each week and transfer this info to my weekly layout.

Weekly Layout: I’m very partial to vertical layouts because they automatically put tasks into a categorized to-do list.

The first column is a general “This Week” space. Here, I put habit trackers, meal prep and things to keep in mind from day to day. This space is great for inspirational quotes too!

The daily boxes are for recurring events or tasks that can be moved around. I’ve assigned the top box for errands and housework, the middle for decor, and the bottom for hobbies.

Here are some tasks I include in my weekly planner:

  • Backing up laptop and phone
  • Charging my Fitbit
  • Grocery shopping
  • Housework
  • Phone calls
  • Self-care
  • Social media posts
  • Trash/Recycling day
  • Workout
  • *Bill due dates are noted a day or two early in my weekly layout. If I forget to pay a bill, I can do it the next day without being late.

Done and done. This system keeps me focused and I plan to keep it this way as long as possible. Are you more of a vertical or horizontal planner? Let me know how you stay organized and productive!
